Hillfield neighbourhood, Aldermouth

Hillfield was a separate village until the city grew up to meet it. The green, the church and the school are still there, and the plots are big enough that you rarely see your neighbours.

The houses are the largest in the city: Victorian rectories, 1930s family houses, and clusters of cottages on Hill Lane. Many have an acre or more.

The trade-off is distance. It’s a car-or-bus place, and the hill is a real hill for cyclists.
