Neighbourhood guide
Lofts, studios and a courtyard that smells of coffee
Foundry Row made railway castings until 1971 and then stood empty until developers realised what a high steel-framed hall could become. The result is the city’s best collection of lofts.
A loft is not for everyone: ceilings are high and heating bills reflect it, but nobody who wanted one has regretted it. The courtyard is a good place to live, with a cafe, a bike repair studio and a ceramics workshop.
Our valuer Joss Whitaker lives here and can tell you which building has the best windows.
