Old Town neighbourhood, Aldermouth

The Old Town is the city’s reason for being, a knot of lanes that predates the river bridge. Most buildings are three or four storeys of brick, with shops at street level and flats above.

It suits people who want to live without a car. The market runs on Saturdays, the station is ten minutes away, and every restaurant worth the trip is within the same square mile.

Parking is the one compromise: permits are limited, and most homes rely on the street. Sound travels in old buildings, so we always recommend a second visit on a Friday evening.
