The house
Rosmarino started as a plain farmhouse on a south-facing slope, and it spent ninety years being added to. We took most of the additions away. What remains is the original stone shell, long and low, with a new interior set inside it like furniture in a gallery: pale plaster, a flat oak floor, glass where the old barn doors were.
The idea was calm. All four bedrooms are the same size, on the same level, with the same sea-facing glass and the same bath. The living room is a single space that opens onto a covered terrace on one side and the pool on the other. There are no thresholds anywhere, so you can walk or roll from the front door to the water’s edge.
The garden is the other half of the house. We planted the terraces with rosemary, lavender and thyme, so the evening air smells like a kitchen. The pool edge disappears into the slope, and at sunset the sea and the water seem to meet.

The edge of the pool has a drop on the far side; it is fenced, but please supervise young children.

The garden is planted for scent and low water use: rosemary, lavender, thyme. It is also full of bees.

It is the newest of our houses and the most contemporary inside. If you want old beams, choose Il Frantoio.
Two couples, eight days, and not one disagreement about who got the better room. They are all the better room.
