The house
Ginestra is the house everyone pictures when they imagine a stone villa in the hills: thick walls the colour of bread crust, green shutters, a roof of old terracotta that has been patched by three generations of the same mason family. The first owners farmed the terraces below it; the last ones kept it as a summer house and never changed a thing. We changed what had to change and left the rest.
The ground floor is one long, cool room under brick vaults, with a kitchen at one end and a fireplace at the other. In summer the doors on both sides stand open and a draught runs through from the pool lawn to the east terrace. In winter the fire does the work and the underfloor heating keeps the tiles warm for bare feet.
Outside, the pool is long rather than wide, a swimming pool first and a lounging pool second, with a shallow shelf at one end for children and for people who prefer to read with their feet in the water. Beyond the lawn the olive terraces step down the hill, and on a clear evening you can see the sea as a thin, bright line beyond the third ridge.

Good to know
-
The access lane is steep and gravelled for the last 400 metres. Any ordinary car manages it; coaches do not.
-
The sea is a view, not a walk: the nearest beach is about 35 minutes by car.
-
The pool is open from mid-May to the end of September and heated to 27 degrees in the shoulder weeks.
Ten of us, three generations, and nobody wanted to leave the table. We cooked every night and the oven in the loggia did most of the work.
