The house
Podere Alloro is the house we built the rest of Casalta around. It was a farm before it was a holiday house, and it still feels like one: a big, plain building with a deep porch, a bread oven in the yard, and rooms that were sized for large families who worked hard and ate well.
Nothing here is precious. The floors are the original terracotta, worn into soft hollows at the doors. The two kitchens, one inside and one under the pergola, were put in so that a dozen people could cook without a rota. The long table on the terrace seats fourteen if nobody minds elbows, and nobody does.
It is the house for reunions, big birthdays and families with children of every age. The pool lawn is fenced, the vegetable garden is yours to pick from, and the dogs have the run of the orchard. If you want a house where the day is organised by hunger and sun, this is it.

The paddock is empty. We keep it for guests who arrive with a horse, which has happened twice.

The farm is real: a neighbour cuts hay in June and it is loud, early and over by nine.

Dogs are welcome in the house but not on the beds or in the pool.
Thirteen of us for my mother's eightieth. She picked tomatoes in her good shoes and said it was the best birthday she had had.
