The house
Most old village houses are a staircase wearing a roof. Casa Cisterna is the exception, and we rebuilt it around that fact. It sits at the lowest point of Pietrafonte, one step from the fountain, and its ground floor is a single level from the street door to the back wall.
It is named for the cistern under the floor: a vaulted chamber that once held the winter rain for the whole lane. You can look down into it through a glass panel in the sitting room. The cool comes up through the stone, which is the cheapest air conditioning in history, though we installed the other kind as well.
Every decision was made at wheelchair height first and then checked against everyone else. Doors are wide, thresholds are flush, the shower has no lip, the kitchen counter has a lowered section, and the courtyard is paved and sheltered by a lemon tree in a big pot. It is a house for guests who need step-free access, and also for anyone who simply likes to arrive and not climb.

Good to know
-
All doors are 90 cm or wider. The lane outside is paved and level; the village itself is hilly beyond the square.
-
The cistern under the floor is visible through a glass panel in the sitting room.
-
There is no pool. In July and August, Il Frantoio's pool is available to Cisterna guests on weekday mornings.
My father uses a chair and for once I did not have to plan a single route. He sat by the fountain every morning and knew half the village by day three.
