The house
Pietraia means a place of stones, and the cottage is exactly that: a hundred and seventy years ago a farmer cleared this meadow by hand and built his house from what he took out of the ground. You can still see the sizes sort themselves as the walls rise, big blocks at the base and small ones at the eaves.
It sits at the top of Valmora, the highest hamlet in our collection, with a chestnut wood behind it and a view of the groves in front. Inside, there are three bedrooms, a kitchen with a long scrubbed table, and a stove room where the fire is the centre of the evening. The thick walls keep the house cool in summer and hold the stove’s heat all night.
Outside, a small walled pool catches the afternoon sun but not the morning one, which means it is always a bit of a shock and always worth it. The best thing about La Pietraia is what is not there: no road, no hum, no neighbour. We leave a folder of our favourite walks in the hall and a pair of binoculars on the windowsill.

Good to know
-
The cottage has no air conditioning: the walls are 80 cm thick and it stays cool, but heatwaves are warm upstairs.
-
The last 800 metres are an unpaved track. Ordinary cars are fine in the dry; in heavy rain we collect you from the tarmac.
-
It is the quietest house we have. No road, no neighbour in earshot, a great deal of birdsong.
We walked for three days without taking the car and swam every afternoon in water cold enough to count as a personality. The stove was lit every night.
