The house
Casa del Fico is the only Casalta house inside the village walls, and the only one you can reach without a car. It was a family house for two hundred years: a ground-floor workshop, living rooms upstairs, a courtyard in the middle where the washing was done and the wine was racked. The fig tree was already old when the last family left.
We kept the plan. You come in from the lane through a heavy wooden door, and everything opens onto the courtyard: kitchen on one side, sitting room on the other, stairs up to the bedrooms along the third. In summer the courtyard is the main room of the house; the table moves outside after breakfast and does not come back in until night.
It is a house for people who like places more than amenities. There is no pool, no lawn, no view of the sea. There is a baker who opens at seven, a square where the older men argue about nothing, and a roof terrace where you can watch swifts at dusk. Dogs are treated as guests and the courtyard is fully walled.

There is no private parking. A free car park is 200 metres away and we send a map and a trolley for the luggage.

Church bells ring at seven, noon and six. We think they are part of the stay.

There is no pool; guests can use the pool at Villa Ginestra for a small fee on weekdays outside July and August.
We never started the car. Coffee at the square, groceries from the lane, a nap under the fig tree. The dog had never been happier.
