Questions

Everything the counter hears most often, answered in full. If yours is missing, call us.

Booking and changes

Can I cancel or change a booking?

Yes. Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before pick-up and nothing is charged, because you pay at the counter. Inside 48 hours the first rental day is charged, and a no-show is charged the first day as well. Date and time changes are free any time before pick-up, subject to the class being available.

Can I return the car to a different branch?

Yes, at any of our four branches. A one-way fee applies: $25 between the three Larkmoor branches (airport, station, riverside) and $79 between Larkmoor and Port Aveline. Return the car during the opening hours of the branch you choose; out of hours the key drop box works at every branch.

What happens if my flight or train is late?

Add your flight number at booking and the airport desk holds the car for 90 minutes after landing. At the station and the city branches, call the branch and we will hold it until closing time. If you cannot reach the branch before it closes, pick up first thing the next morning without losing the booking.

Do you offer long-term rentals?

Yes. From 28 days the monthly rate applies to every day, about a third below the daily rate. For several vehicles or recurring business use, the business page explains monthly invoicing and account options.

Payment and deposit

How much is the deposit, and when do I get it back?

We place a hold on the card, not a charge. It is $500 with Basic cover, $300 with Standard cover and $150 with Full cover. The hold is released within 5 working days after you return the car, usually sooner. It must be a credit card or a debit card with embossed numbers in the main driver's name.

When do I pay, and what is included in the price?

You pay at the counter, nothing is charged online. The price you see includes unlimited kilometres, Basic cover and the rental taxes. Extras, protection upgrades, fees such as the young driver fee or the one-way fee are shown line by line in the booking summary before you confirm.

Do you add a surcharge for cards?

No. We do not add a fee for paying by credit or debit card. We do not accept cash for the deposit.

Fuel, borders and tolls

What is the fuel and charging policy?

Full to full. Collect the car full and return it full, and you pay only for the fuel you used at the pump. If it comes back lower, we refuel at the local pump price plus a $15 service fee. Electric cars leave with at least 90 percent charge and should come back with at least 20 percent, otherwise a $25 recharge fee applies. Choose prepaid fuel or charge and you can return the car at any level.

Can I drive into another region or abroad?

You may drive anywhere in the Calder Coast and neighbouring regions. Crossing an international border needs our written permission at least 48 hours before pick-up, costs $30, and is not allowed with vans. Cross-border cover is only valid in countries we list on the permission form.

How do tolls work?

Two crossings on the Calder Coast are electronic: the Aveline Bridge and the Harbour Tunnel. Cameras read the plate, the operator bills us, and we pass the toll to the card on file at cost plus a $4 handling fee per invoice. You never need cash or a tag.

Can I take the car on a ferry or onto unpaved roads?

Ferry crossings on the Calder Coast routes are allowed. Unpaved and forest roads are fine for the Compact SUV and Family classes when they are public roads, but off-roading, beaches and racetracks are never covered, whatever protection plan you choose.

Damage and accidents

What happens if there is damage or an accident?

Call the number on the key tag, 24 hours a day. Stay safe, take photos, and do not admit fault at the scene. We arrange recovery and a replacement car where one is free. The deductible of your protection plan applies to covered damage: $1,800 with Basic, $500 with Standard, none with Full cover. Report any damage within 24 hours.

How do you record the condition of the car?

Before you leave we walk round the car with you and note existing marks on a tablet, with photos. You get a copy by email. At return we compare against the same record, and you are welcome to be present.

Young drivers and documents

Can I rent if I am under 25?

From 21 years old, with a licence held for at least one year. Drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a young driver fee of $15 per day, capped at $150 per rental. The Family, Cargo van and Passenger van classes ask for more: 23, 23 and 25 years. If you add a driver under 25, the fee applies to the whole rental.

Which documents do I need at pick-up?

A full driving licence (physical card, not digital), a second form of ID for vans, and the credit or debit card used for the booking, in the main driver's name. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an international driving permit.
