Village
Pietrafonte and its spring
A hamlet built around a spring that has never run dry, with one trattoria and a fountain where the village still meets.
The name means “stone fountain”, and the fountain is the point. It was carved in 1790 from a single block of pale limestone, and the water that fills it comes from a spring in the wood above. In forty years the village has never seen it stop.
There is one trattoria, one shop, a chapel and perhaps fifty residents. In summer the trattoria sets tables under a sail on the square; in winter it moves inside and keeps a stove going. The menu is written on a board and changes with what arrives.
A path of fifteen minutes climbs from the fountain to the spring itself, through chestnuts and hornbeam, ending at a stone basin with a bench. Casa Cisterna is next to the fountain, Il Frantoio and Villa Rosmarino are a short drive away.
