The Valmora ridge walks

Four marked paths over open ridges and through chestnut wood, from a gentle three kilometres to a full day with a view of the sea.

The ridge above Valmora at golden hour

The Valmora paths were marked by volunteers over ten summers, using the same red and white flash and a good deal of paint. They start in the village and fan out across the ridge. The Green Path is three kilometres and flat, a loop for slow walkers and small children. The Red Path is twelve, climbs 500 metres and ends at a rock shelf with a view that, on a clear day, includes the sea.

Between them are chestnut woods, open pasture with sheep, old terraces of olive and almond, and the ruins of hay barns. You may meet a shepherd and a dog; you will almost certainly meet nobody else.

La Pietraia has the paths at its gate, and keeps a folder of maps and a pair of binoculars in the hall. For any other villa, Valmora is a thirty-minute drive and a good day out.
