Eight years, six chapters
Our story
The short version, with the umbrella.
-
October 2017 · Hartsford
A borrowed umbrella
It was raining on the 14 bus and Clara had no umbrella. Tom, who never carries one either, had borrowed his sister’s, a bright yellow thing with ducks on it. He offered to share. They got off two stops early, mostly to keep talking.

Spring 2018 · The Larkfield valley
The first long walk
A first proper date turned into a twelve-mile walk and a pub lunch in the village of Ambersley. Neither of them wanted to be the one to say it was time to go home. They have been back to the same table every year since.
-
June 2020 · Hartsford
One flat, two plants
A tiny flat above a bakery, a very large juniper bush Clara rescued from a skip, and a very small kitchen. Tom learned to bake bread; Clara learned that the bush would not die however badly she treated it.
-
Summer 2023 · Portugal and Spain
Three weeks, one van
A borrowed camper van, a tin of sardines for every meal, and the discovery that Tom reads maps beautifully and upside down. Somewhere on a cliff road, Clara decided she was never going to want to travel without him.
-
December 2025 · Larkfield Barn
The question
Tom walked Clara to the barn, which she had always said was her favourite building in the whole county, and asked her on the lawn where the ceremony will be. She said yes before he had finished the sentence.
