Quiet Hours began as a rule: no studio, no lights, nobody asked to smile. Each sitting happens in a room the person already lives in, at the hour the window does most of the work. I stand still and wait until they forget the camera, which usually takes twenty minutes and sometimes the whole afternoon.
-
The first frame of the series. She had just said "this is where I read" and turned to the light.
-
A different kind of portrait: the room, the hour, two people who did not know I was there.
-
The same afternoon, closer. Light grazing hair tells you more than a face would.
-
Her kitchen table, while she made tea. I photograph what a person keeps within reach.
-
Steam is the only thing that moves in a long exposure like this one.
-
Detail from the kitchen table frame, cropped tight as a print for the series book.
