Notes on fog
Fog is a gift for a photographer and a nuisance for a camera. A few notes from a morning I spent in it.
Meter for the light, not the white
The meter wants to turn fog grey. Let it be bright: open up a stop and a half and watch the highlights. The picture should feel like breathing out.
Find something dark
Fog is empty without an anchor. A tree line, a post, a figure: one dark shape gives the eye somewhere to land, and the mist does the rest.
Do not hurry
Fog moves. It opened for about ninety seconds at 6:52 and then closed again. I had been standing in the same place for forty minutes and I took four frames. One of them is in The Long Way.
