Installation

Install the sextant binary or the Docker image, choose a store, and check that everything works.

Updated Getting started Version v2.4

Sextant is a single static binary for Linux, macOS and Windows. The same binary is the server, the worker and the CLI.

Install the binary

ScriptShell
curl -fsSL https://get.sextant.example | sh
HomebrewShell
brew install sextant/tap/sextant
DockerShell
docker pull registry.sextant.example/sextant:2.4
Windowspowershell
winget install Sextant.Sextant

Check the install:

Shell
$ sextant version
sextant 2.4.1 (commit 9c41e07, built 2026-10-14, go1.24)

Choose a store

Sextant keeps jobs, runs and leases in a store. You pick one in the config file.

Store Use it when Notes
sqlite One server, one machine, development Zero setup. A single file, write-ahead logging on.
postgres Several servers, or a managed database you already run Version 14 or later. Sextant creates its own schema.

Create a config file

sextant init writes a starting sextant.toml in the current folder:

sextant.tomlTOML
[server]
listen = "127.0.0.1:7420"

[store]
driver = "sqlite"
dsn = "file:sextant.db"

[queues.default]
concurrency = 10

Start the server

Shell
sextant server --config sextant.toml

The first start prints an admin token once. Copy it:

Text
sextant 2.4.1 listening on 127.0.0.1:7420
admin token (shown once): sxt_live_71c0de5a8e3b4f19a6d2c07be1f45a90

Export it for the CLI and the SDKs:

Shell
export SEXTANT_URL=http://127.0.0.1:7420
export SEXTANT_TOKEN=sxt_live_71c0de5a8e3b4f19a6d2c07be1f45a90

Next: run your first job in the Quickstart.
