No. 8: Saved for later

A short list, and a question for you.

No grand theme this week. It has been a month of finishing things, and the finishing has left a clear space in the head, like a swept floor.

What went into the drawer

  • A small hardback, ink-blue, with a crooked crease in the middle and a date on the first page. It lives on the shelf over my desk and I look at it every morning.
  • A shelf of ash, planed and oiled, waiting for a wall.
  • A loaf I did not time.
  • A pair of socks with a blue darn on the left heel, reported by Ines to be “acceptable”.

What is next

The writing continues weekly. In the new year I would like to run a short series on repair, in the manner of the book series: one object, mended slowly, from broken to useful. If you have a candidate, tell me. I am looking for something with a story and not a great deal of value.

Three small questions

  1. What is the first tool you ever sharpened?
  2. What have you mended and kept using, even though it was cheaper to replace?
  3. When did you last do something slowly on purpose?

Reply with any of them. I read everything, and some answers end up in the letter, with first names only.

A small thing. Thank you for eight Fridays. I did not know there would be this many of you who wanted a quiet letter. I am learning how to write it, and I am glad of the company.
